Counsellor and educator Alison Hodgson has been crowned this year’s Michael W Halsall Solicitors Merseyside Woman of the Year.
The event, organised by Elaine Owen of Designated Associates, businesswoman Ellie Kerr and Gadsby Accountants’ Jean Gadsby, celebrates the achievements of women to leave a legacy of amazing role models for the next generation of women.
As well as the overall award, other categories include Women who make a difference, Health hero of the year, Health professional of the year, business leader and Woman of courage. There are ten categories with two women nominated for each.
This year’s winner, Alison Hodgson, has spent many years as a qualified counsellor and educator in the field of volatile substance abuse (VSA) and Former Legal Highs (NPS). She gained personal experience of the consequences of drug misuse when a close family member was murdered in a drug-related incident in 2007.

This year’s category winners in full: Deborah Aydon and Gemma Bodinetz (arts and culture award), Sue McInally (Women making a difference award), ADDvanced solutions (Health care hero award), Alison Hodgson (NEO community changing award), Jean Taylor (Courage award), Patricia Thomas (Health care professional award), Dame Lorna Muirhead (Lifetime achievement award) and Sam Quek (Sporting excellence award).
The event was held at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza hotel and hosted by Birkenhead-born Pauline Daniels.
Pauline made her name as Britain's best female stand-up comedian, noted for her spot-on comic timing. Progressively, she has extended her range as an entertainer to great effect, achieving acclaim as an actress in various plays such as Shirley Valentine and Twelfth Night. Pauline is a professional singer and has performed in both stage and television.
She successfully owned and managed The Actor's Studio to feature in her own productions and provide great opportunities for emerging local talent. She is an honorary fellow of Liverpool John Moores University and in 2011 she published her book "My Story". Pauline is currently part of the first Everyman Company which will produce 6 plays over the coming months.
